How Do Essential Oils Work?

Hey Lovebugs,

Do you know what the Three Wise men brought to baby Jesus to celebrate his birth?

Do you know what was found in the tombs of Egyptian Pharaohs?

Do you know what Kings and Queens throughout history couldn't do without?

If you answered essential oils to all of these questions then you're right!!

I really want to share with you today why people have used essential oils for more than 5,000 years to promote health, wellness and beauty, but before all that, I want to tell you all some key questions about essential oils:

  • What are they exactly?
  • What makes them so great for your health?
  • And besides the great smell, why have they remained so popular throughout history?

What Are Essential Oils?

Have you ever been to a Farmers Market and stopped to smell the beautiful fresh flowers for sale? Or stopped to pick up a piece of produce that had been cut right in front of you to catch the wonderful aroma?  If you have, then you've already experienced the power of essential oils and didn't even know it.

Essential oils are responsible for the beautiful fragrances you smell every day. They’re also the nutritional compounds inside many plants and herbs. Pretty cool, huh?

Once the oils are extracted from the plant or herb, they bring many of the same health-giving benefits to the table. One of the reasons they’re so powerful is because they’re the “essence” of the real plant or herb, only in a highly concentrated form.

In fact, one tiny, 15 mL bottle of lemon essential oil can contain up to 45 lemons! That's a lot of lemons!

Where Do the Amazing Benefits Come From?

The first time you experience an essential oil, you’ll get a sniff of the pleasant aroma inside, but let's be clear, it's really more than just a nice smell. When you smell these essential oils the effects of them, the molecules, go deeper than just your nose. They go all the way into your bloodstream and then your limbic system.

When these go into your nasal cavity and interact with your sensors, lungs, skin, etc. Then signals are scent to the rest of your body. one of the most affected areas is, like I just mentioned, your limbic system.

This limbic system plays a pretty powerful role in creating emotions and feelings. In fact, some have even called it the emotional switchboard of the brain. This is why you can smell certain things and they transform you to a different place in time, a memory, that also brings up all the emotions stored with that memory.

There is some new scientific evidence that shows inhaling essential oils may be one of the fastest ways to create physiological or psychological benefits!!

Let me  pause really quick and point out that there is a HUGE difference between ingesting an oil and smelling it.  Keep that in mind!! When you ingest something, it goes into your stomach and is processed by your digestive system.

But when you smell the aroma it activates your olfactory nerves and goes directly into your body, lungs and bloodstream. This direct interaction with key areas of the body produces unique and, in many cases, really powerful health benefits.

But Wait, That's Not All!!  Essential oils can also enter the skin directly!! When you use essential oils topically with a carrier oil or lotion,it can deliver a host of healthful qualities.

Well, we all know that the your skin is the largest organ in your body. Generally, in just one square inch of skin, you’ll find all of these important functions going on:

  • 650 sweat glands
  • 100 sebaceous (oil-producing) glands
  • 78 heat sensors
  • 13 cold sensors
  • 165 structures that perceive pressure
  • 1,300 nerve endings
  • 19 yards of blood vessels

And every single part of you body can be influenced by what it comes into contact with!

So when essential oils come into play, they bring the health-giving benefits of nature to your pores directly.

It’s clear that the benefits are vast, but before you dive into using them, let’s see how they’ve been used throughout history and the best ways to use them in the modern world.

Historical Text Vs. Science!

So we've already covered that Essential Oils smell good, and they have some super powerful benefits, but let's look at the evidence that goes back thousands of years!

If you pick up a history book, you will see that essential oils were used in:

  • Ancient Egypt with King Tut and the other Pharoes.
  • Ancient Rome
  • The Bible - where essential oils are mentioned more than 300 times!

Remember, like I said at the beginning that The 3 Wise men brought Jesus some oils? Yeah, Frankincense and Myrrh!

And in today's more modern world, essential oils are as popular as ever before. They are used in many of our beauty products, cleaning products, baby products, candles, perfumes....basically everywhere.

While all of these products DO smell good, because of mass production the oils inside the products don't have the same health benefits as the companies making them would like us to believe.

Not TOO long ago, the plants used to make essential oils were grown organically; without pesticides, herbicides, GMOs. In part, they were grown that way because toxic chemicals like that did not exist at the time. But also, people knew the real power of essential oils comes from their connection to nature.  If you have ever smelled basil that grows in the wild, compared to the basil that you buy at the grocery store, the smells are totally different!

So because of this, in our society today, there are 3 grades of essential oils you need to look out for

 1. Synthetic Oils
These oils are created in a laboratory and are the lowest grade of oil. In some case, they can even be toxic. Avoid synthetic oils!!! These are the really cheap versions you can buy at mass grocers. If the oil price seems too good to be true, it probably is! You DO NOT want to put this type of oil on your pet or baby!!!!

2. Natural and “Pure” Oils
These oils may be overly processed so they lose beneficial compounds. These are the most commonly sold type of essential oils.

3. Certified Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils
These oils are steam distilled, containing beneficial compounds, but they may or may not have been sprayed with pesticides. Therapeutic grade is as first-party designation. In other words, it is self-certified and not recognized by third parties such as Certified USDA Organic. (By the way, Certified USDA Organic, by definition, also means non-GMO.) But let me explain why that is, and why doTERRA is your best option when it comes to buying oils today.

dōTERRA‘s quality standard for essential oils, CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade® , exceeds industry standards. Because organic certification varies from country to country, province to province, and in the US, from state to state, it is not currently possible to acquire all oils under certified organic status. However, through the GC/MS analysis process, we are able to determine if any chemical residue exists in the essential oil, such as pesticides, herbicides, extenders, and solvents. With this rigorous analysis process, we are able to ensure that all CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade® essential oils offered by dōTERRA are a step above organic.

"CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade® essential oils mean something very different. It means we protect the chemical compound of the plant just as it was produced from the earth. We don’t need to improve upon that. If we have the care, the scientific knowledge, the commitment and the integrity, we can preserve that.” -Dr. David K. Hill, D.C., dōTERRA’s Chief Medical Officer.
